How long a fluid takes to forget it was not rotating
Spin a container of water and the fluid inside reaches solid-body rotation in a hundred seconds rather than the three hours diffusion would need. The shortcut is the thin layers on the end walls, and the advantage they give is exactly the reciprocal of the square root of the Ekman number.
A particle is a low-pass filter
A seeding particle does not report the flow; it reports the flow through its own transfer function. At a Stokes number of one it follows 71 per cent of the motion and lags it by 45 degrees, and a fifty-micron droplet at a kilohertz is following two per cent of what it is supposed to be measuring.
Matched at one speed and at no other
Every stage of a compressor passes the same mass flow, and the annulus behind each one is cut for the density the air will have reached there at design speed. Slow the shaft and the air is less dense than the metal expects, so the rear stages carry more volume than they were drawn for while the front ones starve — and below a definite speed no throttle setting keeps all of them working at once.

In a wave tank the Stokes drift is cancelled by a return current because the tank has walls. The open ocean has none, and the drift is cancelled anyway: the Coriolis force acts on the water's real motion, drives an Eulerian current that answers it, and leaves the depth-integrated transport exactly zero at every viscosity. A float under steady swell with nothing to stop it goes round a circle instead of away.
The drag a wake keeps however it rolls up
A plane drawn across the wake of a finite wing contains its induced drag as the kinetic energy of the swirling crossflow. The trailing sheet then rolls up into two vortices, and the energy does not change at all — roll-up moves the drag around the plane without spending any of it. What does spend it is viscosity, which turns crossflow energy into a total-pressure defect, so a plane farther back reads less induced drag, more profile drag, and the same total.
A duct that forgets everything but one number
Whatever is fed into a pipe, what survives a little way down it is one shape. The disturbance's higher modes decay as the square of their mode number, so the sixth is gone in thirteen centimetres where the first survives four and a half metres — and the entrance length is that one mode's decay rate and an arbitrary threshold.
