A boundary that only exists over a window
The curve that separates fluid going one way from fluid going another is not in any snapshot of the flow. It is the crest of a field built from a stretch of history, it moves when the stretch is changed, and reversing the direction of time gives a different curve entirely — both of them real.
The paint that measures the wrong field
Dye, seeded particles and the optical methods all look through the flow or at something put in it. Pressure-sensitive paint looks at the surface, reports a scalar rather than a derivative, and turns a row of taps into a field. What quenches its luminescence is oxygen, which is what makes it a pressure gauge — and temperature, which is the other field a flow is guaranteed to produce.
The singularity a layer makes for itself
March Prandtl's equations into an adverse pressure gradient and the wall shear reaches zero with an infinite slope at a finite station, and the solution cannot be continued past it. The singularity is real, it is not a numerical difficulty, and it belongs to the boundary condition rather than to the equations.
What a mean profile cannot tell anybody
Two flows are built here with mean velocity profiles that agree to four parts in 10¹⁷. One of them carries momentum across the shear and dissipates forty per cent more energy; the other carries nothing. Everything that distinguishes them is second order in a disturbance the mean cannot see at all.
A surface that remembers the diaphragm
Between the shock and the expansion in a shock tube there is a surface across which the pressure and the velocity are identical and the temperature differs by a factor of two. It is made of fluid, so it never goes away, and nothing in the pressure field says it is there.
Three buffer layers, one friction
Four wall models are put through a pipe. The one with no buffer layer at all is nineteen per cent wrong where the turbulence production peaks and two and a half per cent wrong in the friction; the three respectable ones are within two per cent of each other in the buffer layer and spread by seven in the friction. The answer is not where it was expected.
How long the fluid has been in there
Age is the simplest thing a flow can remember. It obeys the shortest transport equation in the subject — its material derivative is one — and no instrument pointed at a steady flow can read it, because a steady flow's every field is constant and its fluid is getting older all the time.
The sound now is the source then
Every acoustic calculation is an exercise in bookkeeping about when. The pressure arriving at a listener was emitted at an earlier time, at a place the source has since left, and the Doppler shift is not a separate effect at all — it is the slope of the curve relating the two.
A breaking strength that is the size of a flaw
Water can be stretched, and how far is a measurement people have made for a century and a half with instruments that agree with one another and not with the theory. Spinning a tube puts the stretch where no gas can reach it, sealing one caps the stretch at water's density maximum, and every measured number turns out to name the size of the worst cavity in the sample.
