The sound that only leaves
A flow is a catastrophically bad radiator, and the reason is that it has no monopole and no dipole available to it. What is left is the eighth power of speed — and the equation is equally happy with sound converging on a jet, which is ruled out by a condition imposed at infinity.
The wind a swept wing feels
Sweeping a wing back is usually justified by saying it meets a slower wind. It does not meet a slower wind. The equations split exactly in two, and the flow along the span is a passenger that exerts no force and changes nothing — until a pressure gradient breaks the split, and then it becomes the reason a swept wing is a different problem rather than a harder one.
Every flow is two flows
Any velocity field splits into a part carrying all of the divergence and a part carrying all of the vorticity. The theorem says so and does not say which split — the two halves can be moved between each other by anything harmonic, and on a bounded region that is an infinite family.
The size a drop is allowed
The Bond number sets a drop's weight against the force its own skin can supply, and it is one when they are equal. By then the drop is a bun — it is a per cent from being a ball at Bond number 0.0079, which is a water drop half a millimetre across.
The sound is what does not cancel
A quadrupole is not a weak source. Every one of the four monopoles in it is as loud as a monopole of the same strength, and what makes the assembly quiet is that they very nearly cancel — one part in ten thousand survives at a hundredth of a wavelength. The eighth-power law is a statement about how nearly, not about how little.
The one exact result
Almost nothing in turbulence follows from the equations without a model in it. One thing does — Kolmogorov's four-fifths law, which fixes the third moment of the velocity differences at −(4/5)εr with no adjustable constant anywhere in it. The companion two-thirds law is not exact, and the 4.02 everybody quotes in it turns out to be a gamma function.
The price of a gradient
Viscosity does not charge for motion. It charges for the rate at which a parcel is being deformed, and a fluid in solid-body rotation at any speed whatever destroys nothing at all. What is charged for is a sum of squares, which is why the bill can be computed twice.
The mirror that is a circle
A flat wall is made by reflecting everything in it. A round one is made the same way, except that the mirror is an inversion — the image of a point at distance d sits at a²/d, and a vortex acquires a second image at the centre that nothing about the wall requires.
Longer, with nothing pulling it
Two flows with exactly the same rate of strain. In one a line of fluid grows by a factor of 148 in five time units; in the other it grows by 10. Turn the straining axes faster than the strain rate and no line grows at all, however hard the fluid is being strained.
