Righting moment — where it appears

The moment a boat's hull, ballast and crew exert against heeling, which the heeling moment of its sails cannot usefully exceed. It caps the side force a rig can make, so above the wind in which it binds a crew must flatten or reef, and the boat's speed stops being a fixed fraction of the wind.
