A wake told what to do
Force a shedding wake near its own frequency and it abandons its own and adopts the forcing's. The band over which it will do so is proportional to how hard it is pushed — and near the edge of the band it takes six times as long to make up its mind.
The teapot effect is a tension, not a pressure
A slow pour runs back under a spout and down its outside, and the name it is usually given is the Coandă effect. The Coandă effect borrows the ambient pressure, and a liquid in air has none to borrow. A liquid sheet is held to a lip by its own surface tension, and it lets go at the one speed that tension cannot carry — the speed of waves along the sheet — whatever the lip's radius.
The inside a flow does not decide
Every body on this site is built out of singularities that are not there. The exterior flow does not merely fail to determine them — it leaves an infinite family, whose members produce the identical field to the last bit outside and are nothing alike inside, and whose coefficients span five orders of magnitude for one unit free stream.
A layer that is an integral of everything upstream
Two surfaces are given external velocity distributions that agree exactly at one station — the same speed and the same gradient. The boundary layers there differ by 38 per cent in momentum thickness, and the two surfaces separate five per cent of their length apart.
Hexagons remember how the heat was turned up
A layer heated from below convects in rolls, unless its top and bottom are not mirror images of each other. Then three sets of rolls at 120° can feed one another through a term the symmetry used to forbid, hexagonal cells appear before the layer is formally unstable, and there is a range of heating in which rolls and hexagons are both stable — so the pattern a layer shows depends on whether the heat was turned up or down to get there.
The sign a stagnation point carries in space
In three dimensions a stagnation point's index is the sign of one determinant, and that determinant is minus the R of the invariant diagram — so the diagram's left and right halves are the two indices. An exact Euler flow in a periodic box has eight such points, four of each sign, never a spiral among them, and they can only disappear in pairs that meet on the one line where the sign is allowed to change.
The drift was the instrument
Kelvin's theorem was checked on this site by carrying a loop and watching its circulation move by eight parts in a hundred thousand. That drift is not the flow forgetting. The exact number is a count of what is inside the loop, it does not move by anything at all, and the drift belongs entirely to the two instruments used to measure it.
Two lifts at one incidence
A wing pitched up and down through the stall does not retrace its own lift curve. At twelve degrees it carries 0.22 more lift going up than coming down, and the loop that opens between the two is the work the airstream does on it — which is where the energy for a stall flutter comes from.
A particle is a low-pass filter
A seeding particle does not report the flow; it reports the flow through its own transfer function. At a Stokes number of one it follows 71 per cent of the motion and lags it by 45 degrees, and a fifty-micron droplet at a kilohertz is following two per cent of what it is supposed to be measuring.
