Surge tank — where it appears

A shaft or chamber open to a free surface, standing on a long pressure tunnel just upstream of a turbine or valve. It reflects pressure waves so that only the short pipe beyond it takes the water hammer, and turns the tunnel's momentum into a slow swing of level whose height and stability set its size.
