The last of the oil
A wet plate on a table is held down by nothing but the difficulty of getting air in underneath it. The force required to separate two flat surfaces with a film between them goes as the inverse cube of the gap, which means there is no finite energy that removes the last of the film and no finite time in which it drains away.
What a fluid takes out of a swing
The damping a body feels from the air around it is not Stokes' drag, and stops being it far earlier than anybody expects — a millimetre sphere in air is already forty-six per cent above the steady answer at one hertz. Past that the damping rises as the square root of the frequency, and the fluid it is fighting is a shell a fraction of its own size.
The better tunnel needs the bigger tank
A turbine governed to hold its power opens further when the head at it falls, and draws the tank down harder. That makes it a negative resistance, the tunnel's friction is the only thing damping the swing against it, and so the smallest stable tank grows as the friction shrinks — 2.78 metres across for five metres of friction, 6.09 for one.
The speed where the damping is exactly zero
Flutter is an algebraic condition on a quartic: one root crosses the imaginary axis, at one speed, exactly. And the quantity that locates it is so nearly flat there that the standard way of finding it from flight test overshoots by a quarter.
The lag that makes flutter possible
This site's own flutter model set the lift deficiency to one and recorded in its notes that doing so throws away the lag which stabilises the torsion mode. Putting the lag back moves the flutter speed from 80.8 metres a second to 131, and removes the need for the structural damping that was covering the artefact.
