Concept

Dissipation function — where it appears

The rate at which mechanical energy is destroyed per unit volume in a viscous flow, equal to twice the viscosity times the squared rate of strain. It is never negative, it vanishes exactly on the rigid motions, and it is the only term in the equations of motion with a direction in time.
