A field says what an essay is about. A series follows one idea essay by essay — from the question that introduces it to the one that assumes all the others.
A curved shock, and the entropy each streamline picks up crossing it. A parabolic bow shock ahead of a blunt nose at Mach six, with the streamlines drawn arriving horizontally and a marker at each crossing whose size is the total pressure lost there. The streamline through the nose crosses a normal shock and keeps three per cent of its total pressure; one four nose radii out crosses at fourteen degrees and keeps ninety-four per cent. Every streamline gets a different entropy, and the stagnation enthalpy is the same on all of them.

1 essay · compressible Stokes' drag stops being the answer almost at once. The damping on a millimetre sphere oscillating in air, divided by Stokes' steady drag on the same sphere, against frequency. The extra term is the sphere's radius over the layer thickness, so it takes over as soon as the layer is thinner than the body — which for a millimetre sphere in air is below one hertz. At a kilohertz the damping is fifteen times the steady value, and the exponent is a half rather than zero.

1 essay · viscous Storage and loss moduli, for one relaxation time and for a spectrum. The two moduli of a Maxwell fluid and of a Rouse chain, against frequency in units of the longest relaxation time. One relaxation time makes the storage modulus overtake the loss modulus at λω = 1 and then leave it behind without limit. A spectrum of 1000 modes makes them rise together as the square root of frequency and stay a fixed ratio apart, so the material never becomes the solid the single time predicts.

1 essay · regimes A circle of fluid, 0.90 of a gradient time later. A material circle in a uniform velocity gradient, carried by the exact matrix exponential of that gradient. It becomes an ellipse — always an ellipse, for every gradient — and the axes it stretches along are the eigenvectors of the symmetric half. In an incompressible flow the area is unchanged however extreme the distortion, which is the statement that stretching in one direction is squashing in the other.

1 essay · kinematics A flow that is incompressible and carries a density that varies three to one. Ideal flow past a cylinder, shaded by a density that is constant along each streamline and runs from one to three across the field. Every parcel keeps the density it started with, so the divergence is zero — measured at 10⁻¹⁰, which is the differencing — and the flow is incompressible in the only sense the word has. The density is not uniform anywhere. Incompressible is a statement about what the flow does to a parcel's volume, not about what the fluid is made of.

1 essay · kinematics A million times faster, and the constant is 48.0. The effective diffusivity along a pipe, divided by the molecular one, against the Péclet number — both logarithmic. Below Pe ≈ 7 the tracer simply diffuses and the curve is flat at one. Above it the dispersion is all Taylor's, rising as the square of the Péclet number, so a thousandfold Péclet number is a millionfold enhancement. The constant in D(1 + Pe²/48) is not quoted here: it is recovered from a numerical solution of the cell problem across the section, giving 48.0000 for a tube and 52.5 for a plane channel, which is Aris' 2/105.

1 essay · regimes A falling drop is a bun, not a tear. The shape of a drop pressed on by the air it is falling through, computed by matching the Legendre component of a sphere's own potential-flow pressure distribution against the change in curvature it produces. The result is oblate — flattened along the direction of travel — because the pressure is high at the poles and low round the equator. The teardrop of every illustration has the wrong symmetry entirely: a drop in free fall has no up, and one at terminal speed is being pressed on from in front.

1 essay · regimes A fifth of the drag power is not heat yet. The energy account of towing a flat plate a metre long through air at thirty metres a second. The power it takes is the drag times the speed. The heat made inside the boundary layer is half the free-stream energy times the energy thickness, and it is less — 78.6 per cent of what was paid. The rest has not been destroyed: it is kinetic energy still in the wake, which will become heat somewhere downstream, in fluid that is no longer touching the plate.

1 essay · viscous Tip to tip, two wings cost exactly half of what they cost apart. The induced-drag saving of a pair of wings against the gap between their tips, as a fraction of what the two pay flying alone. With the tips touching the pair is one wing of twice the span carrying twice the lift, and the arithmetic of that is exact: the drag halves, and the computation returns 0.499257 of the separate figure. Pull them apart and the saving falls away with the square of the distance. Birds fly in a V because the tips are the part worth overlapping, and the spacing that pays is a small fraction of a span rather than any distance a formation could hold by eye.

1 essay · circulation One flow, two observers, two pictures. The same ideal flow past a circular cylinder, drawn in the frame of the tunnel and in the frame of the undisturbed air. The two are related by subtracting one constant velocity. On the left the flow arrives from infinity, divides at a stagnation point on the nose and closes at another on the tail. On the right the air is at rest far away, the body pushes through it, the streamlines are closed loops, and there is no stagnation point anywhere in the field. Every force, every pressure and every measurement either observer can make is identical.

1 essay · kinematics The error in the balance is the number itself. The fractional error in the geostrophic wind, against the Rossby number, on logarithmic axes. It is a straight line of slope one through the origin, and that is not an approximation: keeping the centripetal term gives V_g/V = 1 ± Ro exactly, so the error and the number are the same quantity. The geostrophic wind is one per cent right at Ro = 0.01 and a hundred per cent wrong at Ro = 1, which is the value the number is named for and is quoted as the boundary of the approximation.

1 essay · regimes Nu/Gr^¼ against the Prandtl number, with the exact solution's points on it. The closed form 0.508 Pr^½(20/21 + Pr)^−¼, over eight decades, with Ostrach's exact similarity values marked. The integral method is two to eight per cent high from Pr = 0.7 upwards and 27 per cent high at Pr = 0.01 — which is where the thermal layer is ten times the momentum layer and giving them one thickness stops being an approximation to anything.

1 essay · regimes The mean lift is not the lift at the mean angle. A finite wing's lift curve, with a gust distribution of standard deviation 3° about a mean angle of 10° drawn along the foot. The wing spends its time spread across that distribution, so what it averages is the average of the curve: 0.7951 against the 0.8368 the mean angle promises, a deficit of 5.0 per cent. Nothing has stalled, and no gust has taken the wing past the stall angle: the deficit comes entirely from the curve bending over, and it is there at every angle where the curve is not straight.

1 essay · circulation The same flow, from two different physics. Solid lines: the depth-averaged flow between two plates a small distance apart, with an obstacle standing between them. Dashed: the ideal-flow solution for the same obstacle. They are the same field to a part in ten billion, because averaging Stokes flow across a narrow gap gives a velocity that is the gradient of a harmonic potential. The cell has no inertia at all, which is the one hypothesis the ideal theory cannot do without.

1 essay · inviscid A double integral that comes out an integer. The Gauss linking integral evaluated on six pairs of closed curves. It is not constrained to be a whole number by anything in its own definition — it is a double integral of a smooth kernel — and it returns one to within two parts in ten thousand on two hundred points per curve, because what it is computing is a topological count.

1 essay · kinematics One field, and the two parts the theorem splits it into. A velocity field made of a smooth source, a smooth vortex and a uniform stream, and the two fields the Helmholtz decomposition returns for it. The first carries the whole divergence and has no curl anywhere; the second carries the whole curl and has no divergence. They are computed by solving two Poisson problems on a grid, with the divergence and the vorticity differenced from the field rather than taken from the expressions that built it. Adding the two back together does not recover the field.

1 essay · kinematics The section the pressure asked for. The designed section over the one it started from, both drawn to their own chords. Asking for 28 per cent more speed over the forward 62 per cent of the upper surface produces a section 15.0 per cent thick against the original's 10, with the extra thickness forward and the camber changed — none of which was asked for, and all of which is what that pressure distribution is. The pale outline is the baseline. The one thing the method cannot be told is where along the chord any of it happens: the speed is prescribed against the circle's parameter, and where a given station ends up is an output of the same solve that produces the shape.

1 essay · inviscid Why a flat plate has no drag, drawn as a triangle. A flat plate at incidence with the three forces that must balance. Pressure can only act along the plate's normal, so the pressure force is the arrow perpendicular to the plate. Kutta–Joukowski says the resultant is perpendicular to the free stream. The difference between the two directions is the suction force at the leading edge, which acts forwards along the plate and is exactly L sin α. Without it the plate would have a drag of L sin α, and an inviscid fluid does not permit one.

1 essay · circulation The two ways a shock can meet a wall. Left: the incident shock from the wedge reaches the wall and a second shock turns the flow back parallel to it, meeting at a point. Right: at a larger wedge angle no reflected shock can turn the flow that far, and the intersection lifts off the wall into a triple point with a nearly normal Mach stem standing on the surface and a slip line trailing downstream. The two configurations are drawn at the angles the solver returns, with every shock angle computed rather than sketched.

1 essay · compressible The parabola is the cheapest shape the walls allow. The dissipation of the profile u = A(1 − |y/h|ⁿ) carrying a fixed flux between fixed walls, against the exponent n, divided by the parabola's. Every member of the family satisfies the same boundary conditions and carries the same fluid; they differ only in shape. The minimum is at n = 2 exactly, which is not a coincidence — it is Helmholtz's theorem, and the parabola is a solution of the equations because it is the least dissipative shape rather than the other way round.
