A closure with no memory at all
An eddy viscosity says the Reynolds stress is the mean strain rate times a number, now. The stress it is standing in for takes a turnover to arrive, so the closure is the zero-frequency limit of a response that has a lag in it — and the curve it is the limit of is the same shape as an aerofoil's lift deficiency.
The mass a body has to borrow
Accelerate a sphere through water and it resists as though it were half again as heavy. The half is exact, it is a rational number rather than a measurement, and almost everything a reader infers from it about carried fluid is false.
Twice as slippery along as across
A surface of alternating gas and solid stripes lets a liquid slip, and a flow far above it sees one number in place of the pattern — but the number depends on which way the flow goes. Along the stripes it is Philip's logarithm; across them it is exactly half, for a reason that takes one substitution to show.
