Concept

Knudsen number — where it appears

The mean free path of a gas divided by the size of the passage it is in, which measures how far a molecule gets between collisions relative to the geometry. It decides whether the fluid can be treated as a continuum at all, and it rises when a passage shrinks or a pressure falls.
